Civatte bodies and colloid bodies were infrequent. Infiltrate was more focal but could be band like. Epidermal atrophy and thickening of PAS positive basement membrane were important differentiating features, LM or Melanodermatitis toxica revealed focal mild to moderate liquefaction degeneration of basal cells with atrophy of the epidermis.
The salient histological findings include basal cell vacuolization, apoptotic keratinocytes (colloid or Civatte bodies), and obscuring of the dermo-epidermal junction by inflammatory cells. Secondary changes of the epidermis and papillary dermis along with type, distribution and density of inflammatory cells are used for the differential diagnoses of the various diseases that exhibit interface changes.
What is poikiloderma of Civatte?. Poikiloderma of Civatte is a benign, common and chronic condition, which belongs to the group of melanodermas (pigmented skin disorders). The term 'poikiloderma' refers to a skin change with atrophy where hypopigmentation / hyperpigmentation changes and dilation of the fine blood vessels (telangiectasia) can be seen in the affected skin. Civatte (colloid) bodies may be found along the dermal-epidermal junction or within the keratinocyte layer.

These bodies are similar in their composition to the Kamino bodies of Spitz's nevi, cylindrical bodies in adenoid cystic carcinoma, Civatte bodies of lichen planus, and the collagenous spherules seen in a number of conditions, and may provide a unique clue to the diagnosis of the porphyric bullous eruptions.
